MIT CSAIL Professor Frédo Durand Joins RIS Advisory Board

Remote Intelligence Solutions welcomes MIT CSAIL Professor Frédo Durand to its Advisory Board, bringing world-leading expertise in computer vision, computational photography and visual computing to RIS as we continue to advance the application of AI to electric utility inspection.

Remote Intelligence Solutions (RIS) is pleased to welcome Frédo Durand, PhD, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), to the RIS Advisory Board.

Durand helps lead CSAIL’s Computer Graphics Group. His research spans computer graphics and vision, including computational photography, differentiable rendering, high-performance imaging and techniques for extracting information from visual data that may otherwise be difficult or impossible for humans to perceive. For RIS, that expertise is particularly relevant.

Turning inspection imagery into operational intelligence

Electric utilities are generating rapidly growing volumes of visual information through drones, aircraft, ground-based cameras, inspection contractors and field crews. Capturing those images is becoming increasingly easy. Extracting consistent, reliable and actionable information from them is a much harder problem.

RIS is developing UTELinspect™ acreating a structured operational environment in which inspection imagery can be associated with infrastructure assets, standardized, labeled, compared across inspection cycles and progressively used to support AI-assisted recognition and analysis.

Durand’s experience in computer vision and the interpretation of complex visual information will help guide RIS as we continue developing these capabilities.

Advancing applied AI for electric utilities

The addition of Durand to the Advisory Board comes as RIS continues to expand the role of applied AI within UTELinspect. Rather than treating AI as a standalone technology, RIS is focused on building the operational and data foundations required to make it useful: structured inspection records, standardized asset and condition information, labeled imagery, historical context and continuous learning from real-world inspection activity. This creates the foundation for increasingly capable asset recognition, condition recognition and analysis of changes in infrastructure over time.

Durand’s participation brings an important research perspective to that work as RIS continues exploring how advances in visual computing can be translated into practical capabilities for electric utilities.

From research to real-world infrastructure

Electric utility infrastructure presents computer vision with an unusually demanding real-world environment. Assets may be partially hidden by vegetation, photographed from different distances and perspectives, exposed to changing weather and lighting conditions, and surrounded by visually complex backgrounds. Detecting an asset is only part of the challenge; understanding its condition and identifying meaningful changes over time is ultimately where operational value emerges.

Bringing together advances in computer vision with structured utility inspection information creates an opportunity to move beyond simply collecting images toward building a continuously improving understanding of infrastructure.

That is the direction RIS is pursuing with UTELinspect.

Frédo Durand

Advisor

Frédo Durand is the Amar Bose Professor of Computing at MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). His research spans computer graphics, computer vision, computational photography and visual computing, with particular emphasis on extracting and interpreting information from complex imagery. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Eurographics Young Researcher Award, an NSF CAREER Award and a Sloan Research Fellowship.
